Ubuntu Touch can be installed on a [limited amount of devices](https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/), make sure your Android device is supported. The bootloader needs to be unlocked to installed an alternative ROM, and not all manufacturers support it or make it easy.

There are other alternative mobile operating systems you might consider, like the popular [Lineage OS](https://lineageos.org/) based on Android that support more devices.

thanks. i do love ubuntu - it's fairly straight forward; and my current phone is almost paid off so it's mine and i get the free upgrade - so if worse comes to worse and i brick it, i've got a a non brick phone ready.

I am also very interested in this topic. Is there like special communities for this?

I've not found a general purpose community for Linux phones or anything (yet), but you can usually find communities around specific distributions. For example postmarketOS and UBports have various community platforms: https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Category:Community https://forums.ubports.com/ (I don't even run Linux on my phone, I just like watching the progress of the software and seeing stuff like Sxmo pop up.)

There's also lots of discussion about Linux for phones on the PINE64 forums, but it's mostly related to hardware support.

make sure you get a supported (preferably a flagship) phone because you may encounter lot of bugs with unsupported phones, if you just want to try it, there are ways to use emulators on android and install linux on them
